I have just recently become interested in hiking. My first goal is to hike on the Appalachian Trail in Northern VA for 3 or 4 days in September. I have gone on the hiking trails at a local state park. But other than that I don't have the foggiest idea of how to get started. What equipment, other than good hiking boots, do I need? What arrangements do I need to make? How much does it cost? How do I contact to arrange a trip like this? etc., etc.,
I need guidance. I could use a hiking buddy a

Re: Help!!
02/28Well, you've made a good first step!
As long as you aren't leaving until September, you've got plenty of time to plan, acquire gear, and strengthen up. Start off with the basic gear:
- backpack
- sleeping bag
- sleeping pad
- water filtration
- hiking shoes - choose boots or trail shoes based on the weight of your pack and comfort on your feet
- hiking clothes - wicking material that dries quick
- camp clothes - warm and snuggly
- 3 pairs of socks - one for hiking, one for camp, and one extra
- food
- camp stove (if you plan to cook your food or boil water)
- and of course a map!
There are several good planning books you can get from REI, EMS, etc. Or just keep posting your questions here and you'll get great feedback.
happy trails!!! ~pooh -

Re: Help!!
03/10<what do I need ?>
You need wilderness skills more than equipment.
If you are going for only 3-4 days careful not to buy heavy expedition "indestructable" equipment.
It's expensive and heavy.
Check out Ray Jardine's Adventure page on the internet.
His book "Beyond Backpacking" rocks.

03/18IF
you can tell directions from the sun or the stars, you don't need a MAP . .
jest saying
it won't save many ounces, to be sure ...
but you don't really need a map on the AT -
