Hello all awesome hikers! A couple of friends of mine and I decided to hike the Appalachian Trail next year (summer 09) and I've already been doing a lot of research. I hear there are some good guide books specific to the AT. Does anyone have a favorite that they would recommend? Or any that they wouldn't recommend? Thanks!

Mon, January 21, 2008 - 4:51 AMwww.aldha.org/companyn.htm is the link to the thru' hiker's companion
www.aldha.org/atlist.htm is a link to ALDHA's email list, probably the fastest way to get email advice about hiking the trail.
All the best in 2009!

Mon, January 21, 2008 - 8:02 AMYou should definitely join Whiteblaze. This is the most active online community for thru-hikers. They even have a poll on what hikers have found to be the most helpful book while hiking! www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php
I carried the maps that come with the state-by-state books: www.atctrailstore.org/catalog...list.cfm I didn't carry around the books, but the maps are helpful for elevation reference.
I also carried the data book. They make one each year and they are available for pretty reasonable price on Amazon www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_s...335-4169625
Have fun!
