Guide books?

Hello all awesome hikers! A couple of friends of mine and I decided to hike the Appalachian Trail next year (summer 09) and I've already been doing a lot of research. I hear there are some good guide books specific to the AT. Does anyone have a favorite that they would recommend? Or any that they wouldn't recommend? Thanks!

I just checked in and wanted to know what a blue-blazer is. Currently I'm setting plans to hike the trail in '08 and look for any helpful suggestions. Books, websites, documentaries, ect. Thanks for all your help.

I love Tribe and was so happy to find this tribe on the A.T. My name is Parm I did a flip-flop in 2003 starting at Springer in July so I am sure I met almost none of you here owing to my late start. Anyway, I just wanted to introduce myself and I am curious if any of you out there are eyeing the triple crown in one year thing. Thats my next challenge when time and funding permit and I would love to touch base with anyone who shares that interest.

the first step

i am starting now to prepare for the journey. possibly i will be ready for the 2007 season, but 2008 may be more reasonable...it all depends. i am looking for fellow hikers. i decided doing it alone was not a good idea for me. partially that is because i am profoundly hearing impaired. that shouldn't scare anyone off as once i am around you for awhile i can understand you perfectly. i am in PA and have done parts of it here.

here's the story: I went to Flickr when I went to Tribe
there was already an AT tribe on Tribe, but not on Flickr, so I set one up on Flickr
nothing happened . . .
I was in Macon at the time . . . 18 or more months ago . . .
I went back today and found:
71 members and 400+ images there
go and enjoy it!

I have just recently become interested in hiking. My first goal is to hike on the Appalachian Trail in Northern VA for 3 or 4 days in September. I have gone on the hiking trails at a local state park. But other than that I don't have the foggiest idea of how to get started. What equipment, other than good hiking boots, do I need? What arrangements do I need to make? How much does it cost? How do I contact to arrange a trip like this? etc., etc.,

planning to thru-hike starting march '06.
have to attempt it now that i've told a few friends and put it in print.

not a great deal of backpacking experience, but this has been
a drem since i was a kid. i grew up in massachusetts and used to pass under the AT bridge over the turnpike all the time. i remember the excitement when i found out what it was.

have said for years i wanted to do it before turning 40. i'm 39 in april.

been looking various place to find thru-hikes to chat with. finding plenty. glad to see some more. anyone care to strike up a conversation?

Smokey Mt National Park

I am staying in the area for a few days to hike and camp. I plan on making my base camp in the Hot Springs campground and doing day trips into Smokey Mt National Park.

Any ideas/info/insider tips/stories? Fave hikes?

hiked 300 miles in 1997

My husband and I hiked the AT in 1997 from Gatlinburg to Pearisburg under the trail names Gypsy and Mufasa. Are there any other thru hikers here that we may have met? We were not married at the time, "Mufasa" actually proposed to me on the trail (while camped out on the lawn of Mountain Mamma's). That hike was the most amazing time of my life. I would love to do it again someday. We met one of our best friends on the trail too, he hiked with us for several weeks, went by the name of "Betwixt".
